The Journey Of A Professional Volunteer
Over 25 years, AIDS came to the forefront in the news. Less than two years later, I became involved with a local AIDS non profit providing caregiving, speaking enagements, and education/outreach. I am writing a book that chronicles the journey that I began 25 years ago. Included in it will be my personal struggles, about my family, and where it all started. Lastly but not least.....will be sharing my memories of those who have passed on from AIDS and other people I met along the way.

A very old photo
My mom came across this and we scanned it in. We had to make some adjustments as the photo is from a newspaper clipping from 1975! That would be my back in the photo.

Remembering my grandmother
This evening I was out walking one of our dogs at the local dog park and got thinking of my grandmother Marcellla whom passed away back in the 1980s. What triggered it I was headed out the road that would have taken me to my Aunts house that my grandmother and I often visited.
I have no memories of my grandfather Ralph at all. My grandmother was in my mind one of a kind. The things she did such as the two of visiting my aunt or traveling to Tacoma to see my Uncle Joe and my aunt. I would often go upstairs in their home to the game room where the pool table was located. I never did learn how to play pool properly in all the trips there. I remember the time grandma told me that no one in the family had beaten Uncle Joe at pinochle till I had beat him.
I got a chuckle today thinking of... oh my god could I imagine my grandmother driving on I-5 in this day in age? Hell she often would either forget her keys or purse and we would have go chase her down before she left the driveway.
While she was still alive the family... our family and my moms two brothers familys gathered together for the Christmas. Every year we rotated whoms home the clan would invade for the holiday. After grandma passed away, the holiday gathering started puttering out and finally ended. Grandma was the matriarch - the cement that held the family together.
When I think of Grandma I have two images in my head. One is a picture and my parents have the picture of her on the wall of her sitting on a long among the wildflowers that was taken at Hurricane Ridge.
The second image happened a number of years after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Grandma had wanted to go fishing for smelt and the fish were returning to the Cowlitz River. I remember her climbing down the river bank carrying the big long handled net that people use to catch to catch smelt. After a few tries she had not caught any and was disappointed. Dad walked down took the net did a few swipes of the net up and down the river and came up with a whopping net full of smelt then he handed her the net to hold. I remember the big grin vividly that was on her face.

Remembering.. James "Scotty" Doohan
I am a day late but March 3rd would have been Jimmy's 91st birthday.
Over the years I had the opportunity to see and on two occasions actually have some time to speak to him even if for a brief moment.
A convention promoter that went out of business put on a convention in Springfield, Oregon in 1998. They promoted it as a the Fab Four Tour as it had Jimmy, Nichelle, George, and Walter appearing at the convention together. The convention promoter considered cancelling the convention at one point as the recent shooting at a local high school in respect to the community. The guests wanted to go on and give back to the fans. Walter had cancelled for some reason I do not recall. Jimmy was never one to sit back in the hotel room and do nothing. I remember everytime I turned around he was sitting at his table signing autographs for the fans.
That evening they had an event called Dinner With The Stars. The guests came in after we had finished eating dinner and wandered around and mingled with the fans. A cabaret show followed and one moment that comes to mind is when Jimmy asked Nichelle to come on stage and they performed a beautiful duet.
The second memory of seeing him was at a fundraiser for his grandsons elementary school in Tacoma. He appeared on stage doing his Q&A, signed autographs, and posed for pictures. I wish I still had (I am not sure what happened to it) but I had a picture of him with his arms wrapped around Steve and I for a photo.
Finally, a surprise appearance. I was attending a convention promoted by Horizon Entertainment in Bellevue that had Ethan Phillips and Armin Shimmerman in attendance. The day was wrapping up and Ethan/Armin were on stage signing autographs. We were getting ready to leave when my friend David said quietly. turn around. I turned around in time to see Jimmy sneak on stage and surprise Ethan and Armin. Apparently, neither of them had met each other yet. Jimmy was living in Redmond and dropped in on them. It was arrange between Jimmy and Armins wife as surprise.
Happy Birthday Jimmy. we miss you!

Research
I have been scouring the internet for anything in regards to my dear friend Michael whom I met at the first display of the Names Project Quilt in Seattle back in the mid-late 1980s. It been 20+ years since meeting him. He had AIDS and back then the mortality rate of people living with the disease was on the average 2-3 years.
I may have found a publisher that the book I am working on would fit into the type of books they publish. I asked a good friend of mine her opinion and she agreed.
So far I have been writing in spurts. I have written some about my mentors and those that lost their battle with the disease as welll as those still fighting it.

Beginning
I thought a blog page would be a good way to keep friends and family updated on the book I am writing as well as my work on NDB Media.
The book looks back at my start in being a volunteer to the 1980s when AIDS organizations were struggling to financially to survive in order to help those living with AIDS to a perspective on the AIDS in 2011.
Its been a struggle to write but finding it worthwhile.
